Hi Everyone!
I’m Dawn Ho, one of the directors for WLJ SG and I am both delighted and excited to share with you the happenings of our last event : We Love Jazz Participatory Series #3 – Listening and Sharing Session.
Even after a short break from our biggest annual event – We Love Jazz Party, the team was still feeling rather pooped and needed to recover from all that hard work! But we still wanted to keep the ball rolling and continue sharing our love for jazz no matter how big or small the event. So for the third installation of WLPS, I decided to create a simple and yet effective way for our beloved jazz community to come together and once again celebrate their love for jazz through a – Listening and Sharing Session.
Listening is one of, if not the most important aspect of music. The idea is to pick some tunes one would like to share during the session, submit it to the event facilitator (which was me) and the group would listen to it and the person who picked the tune gets to share about why they love this tune and so on, and the group also gets to share their thoughts on the tune.
So on the 21st of September a small group of jazz lovers gathered at Artistry – one of our friendliest and most supportive collaborators (17 Jalan Pinang). Tunes were picked and submitted during registration and the session began. Even with a modest turnout, what was estimated to be a 2 hour event – in the mix of great jazz, chicken wings, fries and beer – stretched out to 4.5 hours! Tunes kept rolling in – from Wes Montgomery to Ray Charles to Art Blakey and many many more – and the sharing from everyone was fun, free, nostalgic, educational and illuminating for all who were present. Here are some pictures we took of the event!
We also had a nice little merchandise corner set up where people could peruse and purchase our T shirts and tote bags, loving designed especially for WLJ SG by local artist Pixin! Huge love to those who came and bought our goodies!!! 🙂
For me the best part of WLJPS 3 – Listening and Sharing Session was that whether it was a seasoned jazz practitioner, young jazz understudy, hobbyist or jazz aficionado or someone completely new to jazz (aka the curious cats), everyone went home feeling great and full in their hearts through sharing and listening to this music we hold so close to our hearts. I certainly look forward to hosting the next one and seeing more and more people come for this incredibly simple and yet fulfilling experience. Viva la Jazz!!
Special thanks to Kai Chin and Andrew who specially brought down their hi-fi amps and speakers to lend us the best listening experience possible. To Munir to kindly volunteered to man the registration and donations booth. Last but not least to the wonderful people of Artistry for giving us a space to let this happen!
