SIJB Interview Series (Part 3 of 5) – Ting Wei Yap

As part of Singapore International Jazz Battle (SIJB) 2018, the SIJB Interview Series aims to get to know the very people who form the heart of our jazz community in Singapore.

In this third instalment, we talked to Ting Wei Yap who is an aspiring drummer and a SP Jazz Band Alumnus. Ting Wei was part of the Bright Young Things jazz mentorship programme in 2014, now known as the Mosaic Jazz Fellows. He was also part of the ensemble that placed first in last year’s We Love Jazz Battle (WLJB) 2017.

He summed up his experience competing as an ensemble in WLJB 2017, saying:

“We saw this competition as a platform for us to perform and showcase our music to the public, and most importantly have fun while doing it. Each member of the band has their own individuality. By participating as an ensemble, the value of collective effort is paramount and we maximized each individual’s creative energy and musical input during rehearsals. It gave us a chance to channel out innate musicianship and put forth the performance in unity.”

We sat down with him and talked about what it’s like being a finalist last year as well as his experience working with We Love Jazz SG now. Watch the interview here!
