Yes, “WHAT THE JAZZ?!? OPEN CALL GOT TALENT” is back! And for its fifth edition, it will be entirely online.
As part of every International Jazz Day celebration, We Love Jazz SG hosts an open call, inviting all types of performers to share what jazz and improvisation means to them. Our jazz community has very diverse interpretations and it is time to showcase all of them!
Past open call performances include improvised theatre, swing dancing, feedback noise, tap dancing, rap, and even Japanese Shamisen improvisations!
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
To keep this platform available to everyone this year, we’ve decided to host ALL the action online. Here’s how you can participate:

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a jazz competition? The submission checklist says “Your submission is related to jazz and/or improvised music”
The “What the Jazz?!?” Open Call is not a competition! It is a public platform for anyone to take part and be showcased.
Indeed, ANYONE is welcome – of course BOTH jazz and/or improvised music are welcome. You DO NOT need to be a jazz musician, or musicians even. As long as your submission is ‘about jazz’.
What we DO want to see is relation to ‘jazz’ in your submission, as the initiative is for ‘International Jazz Day’!
Do you only accept music? Can I submit something else?
Yes you can! All artforms are welcome, not just music. Dance, poetry, paintings, or even a short talk are all accepted. Be creative!
Where will everyone see my video?
Your video will be showcased on WLJ SG’s Facebook, Instagram and our website on the week of International Jazz Day (April 27 to May 3). Our editorial team may also interview you! Interviews will be posted on our social media accounts and website too.
Is there any judging criteria?
None at all! We are leaving it to participants to define what jazz and improvisation means to them. It’s not a contest. We will post ALL submissions received on the specified platforms.
Do I get any prizes?
Yes, all open call participants will automatically be added to our mailing list in order to receive our newsletter subscription perks – such as exclusive discounts on all future purchases of tickets to WLJ SG events and merchandise!
I have more questions!
Don’t worry, email us at email@example.com with “IJD 2020 Open Call Inquiry” as the subject.
We can’t wait to see your submissions!
